LiftMaster Blinking Light: What Each Flash Pattern Means

LiftMaster 2220L

A LiftMaster blinking light is your opener telling you that something is wrong. The most common one is the main light flashing 10 times when the door won’t close, which points to the safety sensors. Other patterns can mean lock mode is on, the door hit something, or the battery backup needs help. Here is what each one means and what you can check before you call for help.

What the Main Opener Light Means When It Flashes

The big light on the motor unit flashes for a few simple reasons. Each pattern points to a different cause. Count the flashes, then match them to this list.

  • 10 flashes and the door won’t close: the safety sensors are blocked, out of line, or have a wiring problem.
  • 2 flashes when you press a remote: lock mode is on. The light on your wall button will also keep blinking. Hold the Lock button for about 2 seconds to turn it off.
  • 5 flashes with a beep: the door hit something. On newer Security+ 2.0 openers, the door stops if it was opening or goes back up if it was closing.

Safety Sensor Lights

Your LiftMaster has two small sensors near the bottom of the door, one on each side. The amber light is the sending sensor, and the green light is the receiving sensor. When both lights glow steady, the sensors are lined up and working. If your garage door opener light is blinking 10 times, look at these two lights first.

  • Green light blinking: the sensors are out of line, or something is in the way.
  • Amber on, green off: there may be a wiring problem at the receiving sensor.
  • Both lights off: there may be a wiring problem, or a sensor has failed.

Wipe the lenses clean and move anything that blocks the path between them. Then gently turn the sensor until the green light glows steady. LiftMaster says the sensors should sit no higher than 6 inches off the floor. Our post on how garage door sensors keep you safe explains why this part matters.

LiftMaster Blinking Light Codes on the Motor

Newer LiftMaster openers also flash codes with up and down arrow lights on the motor unit. The code shows as a number of up flashes, then a number of down flashes. The codes are not the same on every model. Check the model number on the label of your motor unit before you trust a chart.

  • 1 up, 1 down: the sensors are blocked, out of line, or not connected.
  • 1 up, 2 down: a sensor wire is shorted, or the wires are reversed.
  • 4 up, 1 down: something is blocking the door, or the door is binding as it closes.
  • 4 up, 2 down or 4 up, 4 down: the door stops before it fully opens. This can point to a spring or balance problem.
  • 2 up, then 1 to 5 down: the opener is not responding. Unplug it for 5 seconds, then plug it back in.

Older openers flash one light next to the Learn button instead. One or two flashes point to sensor wiring, and three flashes point to the wall button. Four flashes mean the sensors are out of line, and five flashes mean the opener can’t sense the motor turning. Six flashes mean the motor circuit failed and the logic board needs to be replaced, which is a job for professional opener service.

Battery Backup Lights

Some LiftMaster openers have a battery backup that keeps the door working when the power goes out. The battery light uses colors and beeps to show what is going on. Here is what LiftMaster says each one means.

  • Solid orange, beep every 2 seconds: the opener is running on battery.
  • Flashing orange, beep every 30 seconds: the battery is low.
  • Solid red: the battery is dead and will not recharge.
  • Flashing green: the battery is charging. Solid green: it is fully charged.

Conclusion

A LiftMaster blinking light almost always has a clear cause. Ten flashes point to the sensors, two flashes point to lock mode, and the arrow codes tell you where to look on the motor. Many fixes, like cleaning the sensors or turning off lock mode, take just a minute. Codes that point to springs, balance, or the logic board should be handled by a pro.
